10 Savannah Fun Facts
1. There are 22 squares (parks) in downtown Savannah, each with its own personality and vibe.
2. Savannah is often voted the most walkable town in America.
3. Savannah’s considered the most haunted city in America. But don’t be scared… Dylan’s never seen any ghosts, and Alli’s only seen one.
4. Forrest Gump’s famous bench scene — “life is like a box of chocolates” — took place in Chippewa Square in Savannah. (The bench has since been moved to a museum, but the square is still a popular tourist attraction.)
5. You can drink in the street. Take a plastic to-go cup (no glass or cans) from a bar as long as you’re within the Historic District boundaries.
7. Savannah was the birthplace of the Girl Scouts, founded by Juliette Gordon Low. (Fun fact: Alli is a lifetime Girl Scout.)
8. The Irish were among Savannah’s first settlers, which is why St. Patrick’s Day is the biggest day of the year. (Fun fact: Dylan’s paternal “Kennelly” ancestor immigrated from Ireland to America through the port of Savannah and lived in Savannah for many years.)
9. Bonaventure Cemetery is considered the most beautiful cemetery in America.
10. The Spanish moss that hangs from the trees actually isn’t a moss. It’s part of the bromeliad plant species, meaning it’s more a pineapple than a moss.
“If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, ‘What’s your business?’ In Macon, they ask, ‘Where do you go to church?’ In Augusta, they ask your grandmother’s maiden name. But in Savannah, the first question people ask you is, ‘What would you like to drink?’”
